Maricruz Bonfante earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1999 and is licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland and the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.
Prior to obtaining her law degree, Ms. Bonfante interned for the Maryland Commission on Human Relations, and worked for the Women's Law Center and the Law Office of James V. McFaul, P.A. In addition, she was a student attorney for the Community Development Clinic. After graduation, she worked as an attorney for the House of Ruth Domestic Violence Legal Clinic in Montgomery County, Maryland, assisting Spanish and English-speaking victims with all phases of the protection order process, including representing victims in court. Ms. Bonfante became a partner in the firm of Elmore & Throop, P.C. working primarily on common interest community legal issues, collections, bankruptcy, landlord/tenant and contract issues.
Ms. Bonfante is a member of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, the Real Property, Animal Law and Solo and Small Firm Sections of the Maryland State Bar Association. Ms. Bonfante is on the Peer Review Committee for the Maryland State Bar, which reviews professional complaints against attorneys. Ms. Bonfante has also recently joined the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association and the Civil Justice Network.
Ms. Bonfante is active with the Maryland legislative process. She assisted the Maryland Legislative Action Committee for the Community Association Institute with its legislative research on bills relating to community associations. As a member of the Maryland State Bar Association's Animal Law Section, Ms. Bonfante has spearheaded the effort to pass a bill to prevent the use of pets in domestic violence situations.

- Maricruz Bonfante was recently selected to serve as a member of the eleventh class of Leadership Fellows for the Maryland State Bar Association by the Leadership Academy. She will serve for one year beginning July, 2008.
